Production Methods

  This project involved the construction of a new staff amenities building outside the prison complex, comprising lounge area, kitchen, gymnasium, bedrooms , locker room, and toilet facilities.

  The building forms part of a master plan for the front of the site, including expanded car park, bus turning area for new bus service, and future administration building.

  A primary concern of the client was that the building should be reasonably understated, given the public’s perception of such a building in the context of a prison environment.

  The architecture of the building relies foremost on the refinement of detailing, with materials and finishes consistent with the existing prison buildings.

  An existing nursing home, constructed approximately ten years earlier, is located to the south of the subject site. Associated with the nursing home were approximately ten single bedroom self contained dwellings.

  The first stage of this project comprised an additional fifteen one and two bedroom elderly persons units, the purpose of which was to house elderly single persons or couples, who still retain a sense of independence.

  Stage two (illustrated here) comprises a further nine one and two bedroom dwellings. Each dwelling contains two living areas, one bathroom with laundry facilities, and private courtyards.

  Common areas include the central walkway and garden areas, and car parking at the north end of the site.
