  The existing house was a single level timber cottage on a small site, located in a street subject to tight heritage controls.

  The brief required accommodation comprising three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a single large living space.

  As the site is located on the south side of the street, particular attention was given to maximising potential for natural light.

  The two storey additions are constructed behind the two primary front rooms of the existing dwelling, the second room being converted to a bathroom and laundry.

Production Methods

  An existing factory was divided into several vacant ‘shells’.

  Sufficient space existed within the volume of the building to provide four levels of accommodation, which required increasing the roof height , together with some excavation at ground level for car parking.

  The accommodation required four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a large living area located at second floor level.

  As no pen space exists for the building, all major rooms are oriented toward the rear courtyard which contains a three level water wall.
